The essential applications when living in Mauritius

Share Article

Here are the applications you won't be able to do without once you're here in Mauritius. They'll be very useful in your daily life, I guarantee it.

Mobile apps list

whatsapp

1. WhatsApp

It’s the number 1 app used in Mauritius.

Private or professional, everyone has it. We no longer call each other by phone but by whatsapp. The sofa delivery man, your greengrocer…

Important point: MMS does not exist in Mauritius. So to send a photo you’ll have to find another way, hence WhatsApp.

This is especially useful for the “geolocation” or “pin location” function, because when you’re waiting for a delivery, you’re sure to get a call asking for directions.

2. MCB Juice

I may have worked for MCB for 3 years, but I can tell you that MCB Juice is a gold nugget.

It’s impossible to miss this application. You may not be an MCB customer yet, but you soon will be, because Juice is the application that has revolutionised payment in Mauritius: payment with merchants and also between individuals.

It’s simple, free and instantly visible in your account.

As the number 1 bank in Mauritius, it effectively has a monopoly. “Juice” has even become part of everyday language – “I juice you” everyone understands.

All shops have a QR code so you can pay your bills using the Juice application or equivalent. There’s no need to carry cash or a bank card – all you need is your phone (and an internet connection).

3. My.T Money

Launched to compete with the MCB juice application, it is gaining in popularity.

This app, which originally made it easy to top up your phone credit, can now be used to pay your water, electricity and telephone bills.

And to think that at the time when I had just arrived, you had to go to the post office to pay your water bill (in cash, as bank cards were not accepted) and go to the Mauritius Telecom shop to pay your telephone bill…

You can also buy tickets for the metro express.

And just like the Juice application, you can use it as a wallet, or a means of payment for your purchases via the QR code scanning function.

4. Facebook

An application that is increasingly being abandoned in Europe, this is not the case in Mauritius.

This application, which young people no longer use in France, is THE Mauritian FAVORITE social network. All events are listed on Facebook.

You keep in touch with people via Facebook, but above all you use the Marketplace function to buy and sell all your stuff. There is an equivalent to Le Boncoin, weshare.mu, but the marketplace is more user-friendly in my opinion.
