You are getting a residence permit in Mauritius and you want to bring your spouse, your children, or your parents along? That is exactly what the Dependent Permit is for. A permit that is often underestimated in its complexity, yet essential to establish your whole family legally on the island.
I am a French expat living in Mauritius since 2018, and I have personally managed dependent permit applications for several families. In this article, I share everything you need to understand what this permit actually involves.
1. What is the Dependent Permit?
The Dependent Permit is a residence permit issued by the EDB (Economic Development Board) to family members of a Mauritian residence permit holder. It allows close family to live legally in Mauritius for the duration of the main permit.
It is not a standalone permit: it is always attached to the main permit holder’s permit (Self-Employed Occupation Permit, Investor Occupation Permit, Retired Residence Permit, etc.).
2. Who is eligible?
Eligible dependants are:
- The spouse (official marriage or opposite-sex partner)
- Unmarried children under 25 (including stepchildren and adopted children)
- The parents of the main permit holder
Dependants cannot work in Mauritius on this permit. To carry out any professional activity, a separate application (Work Permit or Occupation Permit) is required.
3. Key points to plan for
Mandatory physical presence
Each dependant must be physically present on the day of the EDB appointment, with a valid tourist visa. This is a point that is often poorly anticipated, especially for families who stagger their arrival in Mauritius.
Medical examinations
Medical examinations are mandatory for each dependant, carried out by an EDB-approved doctor in Mauritius. The best approach is to coordinate them at the same time as those of the main permit holder, to avoid multiple trips to the clinic.
Civil status documents
Birth certificates, marriage or cohabitation certificates, adoption documents… all must be in English or French, with a certified translation if needed. Document compliance is a frequent stumbling block.
EDB fees
The official fees are USD 400 per dependant, paid directly to the EDB on the day of the appointment.
4. Duration of the permit
The Dependent Permit expires at the same time as the main permit. If the main permit holder renews their permit, dependants will also need to renew theirs. Both processes are generally handled in parallel.
5. Working with me
The Dependent Permit is not offered as a standalone support service. It is always integrated into the main permit support: I coordinate the entire family file at the same time, which avoids scheduling mistakes and unnecessary back-and-forth.
The dependants add-on is 150 EUR regardless of the number of dependants, on top of the main permit support. It covers the coordination of the additional documents and the follow-up of all Dependent Permit applications for the whole family.
