Medical Appointment in Mauritius: Our Experience at C-Care Wellkin

Our friend had already survived getting lost in the Black River Gorges… but it was a sneaky ear infection that decided to complicate the end of his stay in Mauritius. Between the pain, the heat, and the worry, the question came up fast: how do you get medical care quickly on the island, without a local GP, without your usual health coverage, without the familiar system back home?

Here’s how a simple ear infection turned into a very instructive — and ultimately reassuring — experience with private healthcare in Mauritius.

Our experience at C-Care Wellkin, step by step

One phone call to C-Care Wellkin in the morning, and the first surprise: an appointment available the same day. We arrived at the clinic at 9:30am. Registration as a new patient took just a few minutes — smooth, no mountains of paperwork. We were third in line to see the ENT specialist.

The consultation took place in a modern, clean setting with an attentive doctor. Prescription in hand, we headed straight to the pharmacy… located right inside the clinic, a few steps from the consultation room. No need to venture back out into the heat.

By 11:30am — less than 2 hours after arriving — our friend had his consultation, his medication, and had even had time to grab a coffee at the clinic’s cafeteria. If you’ve ever spent a full morning at A&E for the same thing, you’ll understand why we were genuinely pleasantly surprised.

Private healthcare in Mauritius: what you need to know

Mauritius has a network of high-quality private clinics spread across the island. Among the most well-known: C-Care Wellkin (in Moka, in the heart of the island), Apollo Bramwell (in Floréal), and C-Care Ferrière (in the north). These facilities are equipped with modern equipment, and doctors have often trained in France, the UK, or Australia.

One of the biggest differences compared to healthcare back home: no referral needed to see a specialist. You book directly, sometimes the same day. Wait times are short, the service is professional, and you never feel like you’re imposing.

There is also a public sector (government hospitals), free for Mauritian residents, but wait times are significantly longer and the conditions considerably less comfortable. For expats and visitors, the private clinic is by far the most efficient and reliable option.

How much does it cost? Breaking down the fees

Here’s exactly what this ENT consultation in Mauritius cost:

  • ENT consultation: MUR 2,000 (approx. €40 / £35)
  • Medication (antibiotics + pain relief): MUR 1,500 (approx. €30 / £26)
  • Total: MUR 3,500 — around €70 / £60

For context: a GP visit in Mauritius typically costs between MUR 800 and MUR 1,200. Specialists are naturally a bit more expensive, but remain very reasonable compared to private healthcare in Europe.

Practical tips if you don’t have health insurance

Visiting, on holiday, or just starting out as an expat without local health coverage? Here’s what to know before stepping into a private clinic in Mauritius:

  • Private clinics accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard). No need to carry cash.
  • Keep all your receipts: some travel insurance policies and premium bank cards (Gold, Platinum, Infinite) reimburse overseas medical expenses with proof of payment.
  • Fees vary between doctors and clinics: don’t hesitate to ask for an estimate when booking.
  • For emergencies, C-Care Wellkin has a 24/7 emergency service.
  • Avoid public emergency rooms unless your situation absolutely requires it — wait times can be very long.

Why health insurance is essential in Mauritius

€70 for an ear infection is very manageable. But a hospital stay, surgery, or — worst case — a medical repatriation? Costs can climb to tens of thousands of euros within days.

Whether you’re moving to Mauritius or spending several weeks there, going without adequate health coverage is a real risk. I personally compared the main options for expats — the CFE, local Mauritian insurers, and MSH International — and my clear recommendation is MSH International for families and expats who want genuine peace of mind.

I cover everything in detail in my full guide on health insurance for expats in Mauritius: plan comparisons, what’s actually covered, and why I consider it the best choice for living comfortably in Mauritius.

In summary

This little medical adventure had a happy ending. Our friend left relieved, prescription in hand, medication in bag — and well enough to get back to exploring Moris the next day.

The good news: private healthcare in Mauritius is accessible, fast, and genuinely good quality. Clinics like C-Care Wellkin offer a level of service that would be the envy of many patients back in Europe. And with the right health insurance, these costs can be fully covered.
