What is the best time to visit Mauritius?

best season to come to mauritius

A question that comes up all the time — and for good reason. Given the price of a plane ticket, you want to make sure you’re making the right choice. So when is the best time to visit Mauritius?

The honest answer: it depends on what you’re looking for.

The weather in Mauritius — don’t stress about it!

Mauritius is a tropical island — and that changes everything. The weather can go from bright sunshine to a one-hour shower and back to sunshine again in 20 minutes. That’s just island life, and Mauritius is no exception.

The good news? It’s warm pretty much all year round. Summer is hot and humid, winter is mild and pleasant. Whatever the season, you’ll always be warmer than back home.

My advice: always pack a light raincoat or umbrella — and enjoy the rest. The weather in Mauritius really isn’t worth worrying about.

Month-by-month breakdown:

January

Avoid if possible. You’re right in the middle of cyclone and rainy season. It can be sunny and hot with bright blue skies — but nothing is guaranteed. Humidity is at its peak. It’s also the local festive season, so many shops and businesses are closed.

February

Same as January. The weather is unpredictable — glorious sunshine or grey and rainy days, there’s no way to know in advance. Still cyclone season.

March

Mixed. I updated my take on March after the very rainy March 2023. It’s the end of cyclone season but you can still get days of heavy rain. Still very warm overall.

April

A good time to visit. Temperatures are slightly milder than December-January, you can swim comfortably. An occasional shower may still pop up — it’s the transition into the dry season.

May

It cools down a little but it’s still a great month. I love this period when you’re no longer suffocating like in the months before. Pack a light jumper and trousers for the evenings, especially if you’re heading inland. The water is still pleasant during the day.

June

The austral winter starts to settle in. Temperatures drop but remain very mild: 20-25°C. It’s warm during the day when the sun is out. Bring a layer for the evenings. It’s also the start of kitesurf season — Le Morne starts to fill with colourful kites 🪁

July – August

Winter in Mauritius. The water is cooler and locals don’t swim — but you’ll have the beach pretty much to yourself. Trousers and a jacket in the evenings. This is low tourist season: hotels are quieter and rates are much more attractive. The locals’ secret: this is the perfect time to treat yourself to a 5-star hotel without breaking the bank 🏨

It’s also peak kitesurf season — Le Morne is a spectacular sight, covered in kites of every colour. And it’s the best time for hiking: Le Morne, Le Pouce, La Tourelle… stunning scenery under clear blue skies. ⚠️ Avoid the east coast at this time of year — very windy due to the trade winds. Stick to the west coast and the north instead.

September

End of winter. The sea gradually starts to warm up again. A beautiful transition period.

October

It’s warm again — back above 25°C. One of the best months of the year to visit, with fewer crowds and still reasonable prices.

November

Summer is in full swing. Sweet exotic fruits appear at the markets: lychees, pineapples, watermelons 🥭 The water is warm, you won’t hesitate to jump in. One of the best periods of the year.

December

The star month. Sunny, warm, lychees and watermelons in abundance. The flamboyant trees are in bloom — Mauritius looks stunning. Watch out for mosquitoes. And bear in mind — cyclone season is starting, so a rainy day is always possible. It’s also peak tourist season — flights and hotels at their highest.

Based on your profile — which season suits you?

Profile Best period
🏖️ Beach & tan October → December
🥾 Hiking & nature June → September
👨‍👩‍👧 Family with young children September → November
🤰 Pregnant / seniors June → September
💑 Honeymoon Year-round (avoid January-March)
🪁 Kitesurfing June → September

Summary — best time based on what you want

🌟 The star months: October, November, December and April The best balance of warmth, sunshine and calm seas.

☀️ Want to feel the heat and swim? → November and December — hot, sunny, warm sea. Watch out for humidity and mosquitoes.

🥾 Want to hike and explore nature? → June to September — mild temperatures, clear skies, perfect for Le Morne, Le Pouce, La Tourelle. Pack a light layer for mornings and evenings.

🎰 January to March: it’s a lottery It can be absolutely beautiful… or very rainy. Cyclone risk between January and March. Avoid if you’re travelling with young children, pregnant, or sensitive to heat and humidity. The upside? It’s mango and lychee season 🥭

✈️ Flight prices

  • 📈 Peak season = July-August + December-January → flights and hotels at their highest
  • 📉 Low season = February-April → good deals but watch the weather
  • 💡 The sweet spot: October-November → great weather + still reasonable prices

The weather is a lottery — but in Mauritius, even when it rains, it’s warmer than back home ☀️
